News Update 2017...

Harrogate Gala

There have been lots of changes in our club since last summer 2017, of course there was our usual Harrogate gala we attended in November, and although most of our swimmers were first time competitors they did extremely well, we were more than pleased with the medal total and personal best results.

Soon after this some of our athletes took part in a table cricket tournament being played even though it was the first competition they had take part in, we are so proud of them well done all.

Following in the wake of this was our Christmas party again a very pleasant afternoon spent dancing and eating with yet more new members and coaches joining us this time.

2018 and even more changes...

Since we now have a more qualified coaches, teachers and pool side support we have been able to reorganise our swimming lessons. Still making available the one to one lessons for total beginners we also have been able
to open an intermediate class for those able to swim but not quite up to squad level. And of course our squad coaching sessions. These give everyone more time and space in the pool and the benefits of this can be seen
every Saturday with steady improvements from all our swimmers.

We are very fortunate to have the coaches we have and it makes such a difference to our
swimmers. Again the results were shown in our own gala which was held on 25th March 2018
with visitors coming from all areas.

Then to round it all off we now have a new secretary. Mr Tom Jeffrey has taken over from
Kath as I have now retired. I am confident he will do a grand job and always have our
athletes best interests at heart.

On a sadder note while this has been re-organised it has been disappointing that fewer athletes have been using the sports hall. While we have only one coach in the sports hall we really need more help (parents). But plans are in place to adopt other sports which should encourage more athletes to attend on a regular basis.

A session practicing archery is being organised. Anyone interested just ask Andrea or Emma they will be able to help.

Lucy at National Games 2017Lucy Bridson  with her mascot Gordon the gofer after receiving her Gold Medal in the100metre Freestyle at the Special Olympic National Games in Sheffield.

Lucy also won a Silver Medal, she did very well with two very fast times.

Lucy has worked well in some difficult times when her sister and coach was taken ill this year and was no longer able to help Lucy in her training, but she worked hard and has been rewarded.

We are delighted to know Sally in on the road to recovery and our best wishes go to her.

Well done Lucy we are proud of you.

24 Peak Challenge

24 Peak Challenge

Martin Brooks a young man from Sunderland is doing the 24 Peak Challenge in 24 Hours and raising funds for Special Olympics Sunderland.

This is very kind of him and I am assured not an easy task.

Obviously we would like to see him do well and accomplish the challenge, but it would be just as nice if he could
raise a fair amount of money for us.

You can donate at the club through sponsorship forms or we now have a
Justgiving page so have a look at that and maybe leave a little something behind for us.

Thank you.

Special Olympics GB National Games 2017

AndrewWe are delighted to congratulate Andy Larmar on being chosen for the Special Olympics Northern Region football team. Andrew will be taking part in the National Games at Sheffield in August 2017.

Andy has been a member of Sunderland Special Olympics since we started in 2008. He swims as part of the Sunderland competitive swimming squad and excels in the medal stakes.

He is a charming young man with a keen sense of humour, everyone’s friend and a constant support to our younger members. Andrew is always open to sharing his Grans corn beef pies!!!

We are absolutely delighted he has been chosen for the games and feel sure he will give a top rate performance and be a credit to the team.

Well done Andy, we are so proud of you.
